主讲人简介：

John Winters, who graduated from Georgia State University in August 2009 with Ph.D. of Economics, is Professor of Economics at Iowa State University.

He holds many Academic Positions, such as Research Fellow of the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA), Fellow of Global Labor Organization (GLO), Editor of Papers in Regional Science, Editorial Board of Growth and Change, Editorial Board of Journal of Regional Science, and Editorial Board of Review of Regional Studies.

His research interests include Regional and Urban Economics, Labor Economics, Economics of Education, Public Economics, Entrepreneurship Economics, Resource Economics, and Health Economics.

In the past five years, John Winters has been awarded Ranked by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) among the Top 5% researchers in the world, Recipient of the Geoffrey J.D. Hewings Award for distinguished contributions to Regional Science, and Georgescu-Roegen Prize in Economics Runner-Up for best paper published in the Southern Economic Journal.

Title:

Immigrant Self-Employment across the United States

Abstract:

Immigrant entrepreneurs are critical to regional and national economies. Immigrants in the U.S. have higher self-employment rates than natives, and immigrants have made outsized contributions as founders of numerous highly successful firms. However, immigrant self-employment rates vary considerably across areas. This paper documents important differences in immigrant self-employment rates across the U.S. Our main measure is the percentage of immigrant workers in an area who are self-employed; i.e., the self-employment rate for the foreign-born. Northern regions have especially low self-employment rates among their immigrant populations compared to other areas of the U.S. This relationship holds for numerous sub-samples of immigrants and is not driven by any particular group. The relationship persists after controlling for numerous individual and local area characteristics. The results have important implications about the location choices of immigrant entrepreneurs.
