The Impact of Temperature on Productivity and Labor Supply

报告摘要：

Hotter years are associated with lower economic output in country-level data. We show that the effect of temperature on labor is an important part of the explanation. Using high-frequency micro data from selected firms in India, we find that worker productivity falls on hot days. Workers exposed to high temperatures are also more likely to be absent. Most mechanisms other than heat stress cannot account for effects at such short time scales. Using a nationally representative panel of manufacturing plants, we find that annual output falls by about 2 percent per degree Celsius. This response appears to be driven by a reduction in the output elasticity of labor. Estimated effect sizes for both the high-frequency case studies and the national panel are consistent with prior cross-country panel studies and large enough to account for the whole of the country-level response of GDP to temperature.

嘉宾简介：

Eswaran Somanathan is a professor in the Economics and Planning unit, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi. He received his PhD in economics from Harvard in 1995, and has taught at Princeton. His research is in the economics of environment and development and microeconomic theory. His work has appeared in top leading journals such as American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,and so on. He is the Editor of Environment and Development Economics and was a Co-ordinating Lead Author for Working Group III of the Fifth Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
